Beginning in utero, children are exposed to toxic chemicals derived from plastics as well as plastic particles themselves, and there is evidence that these exposures pose risks for children’s neurodevelopment and long-term health. Recently, the group published a call to action highlighting this evidence and offering a series of recommendations to reduce the production, use, and toxicity of plastics.
In this discussion, Dr. Marsit will provide an overview of the science behind the developmental risk posed by plastics and chemicals from plastics, the challenges in determining the exposure profiles and toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics, and describe recommendations that should be taken to protect children.
